More Than Just A Library

Book’n-It was the dream of Jessica Piel, a high-school student at White Swan and head librarian of Book’n-It. For her it was always about the kids and the community. It was a way to safely reach kids during the worst of COVID-19 but has quickly demonstrated how wonderful a tool it is to serve the community long term. While there are rewards for bringing books back there are no penalties if books get lost or destroyed. The kids are absolutely overjoyed whenever the library shows up and are delighted by how Jessica always remembers their name and what books they like. Book’n-It is a way to love people by giving them access to fun books, snacks, games, academic resources, and more. We have been able to use the library to check in on and meet community needs.

“We see God’s love when a kid is sitting at the coloring table and talking to the leaders and having a good laugh. We see God’s love when the kids are getting their snack and talking about what books they checked out. We see God’s love in the children that are playing with the kick ball and enjoying themselves to their little hearts’ content. We see God's work when we leave and the kids tell us, ‘we’ll see you next time,’ as they wave see you later and follow the library while it pulls out of the projects and we see them walking home with their little, yellow library bags.” - Jessica Piel
